Why We Give: Faithful Stewards of What Is His

In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30), Jesus teaches that everything entrusted to us ultimately belongs to the Master. The servants are not owners; they are stewards. Each receives according to his ability, and each is accountable for what he does with what he has been given.

Biblical giving flows from that same conviction.

God has entrusted to us time, resources, opportunities, and influence. Our finances are not autonomous possessions but gifts placed in our hands for a season. When we give, we are not losing what is ours—we are faithfully stewarding what is His.

The faithful servants in the parable are commended not for equal outcomes, but for faithful obedience. The issue is not comparison, but trust. Generosity becomes an act of worship, a declaration that we trust the Master’s character and participate in His purposes.

We give because:

  • God owns all things. “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof” (Ps. 24:1).

  • We are stewards, not proprietors. What we manage today, we will one day give account for.

  • Faithfulness matters. The Master commends those who actively invest what they have received for His glory.

  • Eternal joy is the goal. “Enter into the joy of your master” is the reward of faithful stewardship.

Giving, then, is not mere obligation. It is an expression of trust in Christ, participation in His kingdom work, and preparation for the day when we will stand before Him.

We give because we belong to the Master—and all that we have belongs to Him.
