When Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age….” We this as a command, not as a suggestion. We are driven by the fact that we are called “to Know Him and to Make Him Known.”
Acts 1:8 says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
We understand that our “Jerusalem” is Staunton- VA and our community, our “Judea” is the state of Virginia, our “Samaria” is the United States, and finally our “ends of the earth” is just that… everything else. We do not have an either/or strategy of carrying the Good News of Jesus Christ. We have a BOTH/ AND view in that we are to reach people locally and globally with the Gospel message. We seek to accomplish that through partnering with local mission organizations, local church planting, our giving that reaches missionaries across our state, across our country, and across our world and through numerous other strategic partnerships.
Our Church Plants
Calvary Baptist Church is a church that believes that the local church is God’s idea and that God has chosen to bless the church as they carry-out His message. Instead of trying to become a mega-church in the Shenandoah Valley, nearly 10 years ago the leadership of the church decided to grow through church planting.
- Church Downtown is the daughter church of Calvary Baptist Church of Staunton, VA. Calvary Baptist is a church that has a vision to plant churches in the Shenandoah Valley.
- Our Lead Pastor, Rob Spencer, began serving on staff at CBC in January of 2010 as Family Pastor. After beginning a new modern-style service within the walls of CBC, Pastor Rob felt God leading him to work with CBC leadership to continue carrying out their vision of planting churches. So with the blessing and support of CBC, in June of 2012, Pastor Rob, Pastor Mike and a group of committed Christ-followers from CBC began meeting to pray and make plans for launching a new church in Downtown Staunton, Virginia. In February of 2013 our core group of about 40 – 50 adults began meeting separately for Sunday Morning Worship Services within the walls of CBC.On May 5, 2013, we held our first service with our core group in the Visulite Theater in Downtown Staunton. For the next three months we continued to pray and prepare for the mission that God placed before us. On July 1, 2013, Pastor Mike Nay joined Pastor Rob full time and together God has called them to lead Church Downtown in the mission of being authentic followers of Jesus Christ, reaching the unreached, and multiplying the Kingdom of God. On August 25, 2013, we officially launched Church Downtown! We are excited to see how God will continue to write the story of His Church Downtown!
- Village Church is the most recent church plant to be sent out from Calvary Baptist Church. In 2014, God gave our pastor, Robert Hampshire, a vision to plant a church in Churchville, VA. After much praying, dreaming, and discussing with two men who would later become the Elders of our church, several families began to meet together to prepare to follow Jesus’s Great Commission and go start a church. Soon after, Village Church was sent out from Calvary Baptist Church to reach Augusta County and beyond for Christ.
